About Thomas Verstraeten

Thomas' practice focuses on European law, competition law, law of regulated sectors, and energy law.

He handles merger control notifications with the Belgian competition authority and with the European Commission, including complex mergers. Thomas assists clients in cartel procedures and abuse of dominance cases. In addition, Thomas represents members states and companies in state aid procedures before the European Commission and in litigation before the European Court of Justice. Thomas also acts in cartel damages litigation.

He assists different players in the energy sector such as renewable energy producers, electricity and gas suppliers, grid companies, industrial companies and energy exchanges. Thomas advises on topics such as grid access, grid connection, regulated tariffs, TPA, gas hub contracts, gas and electricity exchange rules, balancing mechanisms, supply agreements, power purchase agreements (PPA), licenses and permits, green power certificates and subsidies. Thomas assists  renewable energy projects and offshore windfarms, biomass plants, solar energy and geothermic projects.

Thomas has a wealth of experience in litigation with regard to regulatory decisions of regulators (CREG, VREG en CWAPE) before the Markets Court, the Brussels Court of Appeal, the Council of State or the Constitutional Court.
